Outdoor lighting is not for the faint of heart!


Making great outdoor photo's is as easy as 1.2.3...4.5.6.7.8.9.10.11....1,000,000
I am talking about portraiture here.
There are allot of factors in outdoor photo's of people to be considered.
One of the biggies is "where is the sun?" The Sun will not be ignored if your outside trying to take photo's of your family or friends... or paying clients.
So many times clients have come at one in the afternoon and go... The sun is shining soooo bright, it should make for some Awesome photo's!!! Well, if you don't know what to do about the sun, it will mess you up every time. I used to look out on a cloudy day and think...Whew! don't have to deal with the sun, we should get some awesome shots!
With a little patience and ALLOT of practice, you too can go outside at near noon in the desert sun and produce outstanding portraiture. The key is Use the sun in your favor, you cant point peoples faces toward it...they'll squint... if you point their faces away from it ... you get dark shadowy silhouettes. Unless!!!! And here is where you turn your camera off the AUTO Setting...
You need to force some flash on them to fill in those shadows a bit. Allot of people know this now, But Wait There's MORE!!!! Flash is not the same light color as the sun and you can run the risk of making your subjects face look pale. so put a warming gel in front of your flash to balance it to the sun. There are other ways of overcoming the "Sun" issue, but this is probably the simplest way I know of.
